Ouch!

Just sliced my thumb with a bread knife.

Blood everywhere. Funny thing is, caught myself studying the specular effect on it, and wondering what the IOR should be :-)

It all looked pretty realistic too. Don't know about Lux, but Nature certainly does a fine job of indirect lighting, sss and caustics, and all in real time too.

Hmm ...

I've fallen into the habit of checking this site and the two Renderosity forums relating to Pose2Lux each day, as well as checking the Renderosity gallery for any new pictures made with Pose2Lux's help.

As far as I can see, there's been nothing posted for quite a while: no renders, no questions, no suggestions ... zilch! It's almost becoming embarrassing that the Renderosity threads are 'stickied'.

It's clear that the initial excitement over a working exporter has diminished considerably, which I suppose is to be expected. Either that or I've screwed up badly with the exporter and no-one can get it to work :-)

Anyway, today I'm feeling singularly unmotivated to bother with any more coding. I've just added a couple of useful features (support for multiple volumes and the facility to export a separate materials file) which will be in v0.5.1 (to be made available very soon) and it seems to me that it's now a fully-featured exporter that can probably be left as it is for a while. Until I get around to adding a built-in material editor (planned for June/July), it seems adding anything else is just 'tinkering'.

Chatroom - under the Create Content menu option

So, I've installed another - simpler - version of chat ... the big advantage of this one is that anything typed into here will be part of the system and searchable. I would hate pearls of wisdom to be lost simply because they were mentioned in a chat which didn't save those pearls.

To Rhionon, we can set up subject-specific chats (i.e., your passion: materials) and keep things on-topic that way. I'll let you have a think and a play and let me know what your response is to all this. Smile

Hugs to all... Kiss

Getting busy

Well, my few months of not having to work for a living are most definitely at an end! The next six to eight weeks are going to be pretty manic, which means not much time for Pose2Lux development Cry

Still, with v0.4.7 out I think we have an exporter that will meet most needs for a while, and the enforced break from development at least gives me time to think carefully about the way to go with the material editor.

If I do get some time to play with Pose2Lux over the coming weeks, I think I'm actually going to try and render something rather than coding something - can't be letting you guys have all the fun!

Take care,
Royston

Now, there's chat

No idea if this chat thingie is going to work, since I'm always up when all sensible people round the world are fast asleep, but anyway, please have a go and let me know if it is working. And if it is annoying.

And whatever else you want to know about it... if I don't know the answer, I'll be sure to make something up. Laughing

The sun came out

Do you guys spend much time on 3D stuff when the weather's fine? I find it really difficult to concentrate on anything involving the computer when the sun comes out! Where I live, on the north coast of Devon in England, we don't get many truly glorious sunny days but there's been a few over the last week and I just can't make myself stay inside and do any work, especially programming Frown

For me, 3D art or programming is a Winter endeavour anyway: I get far too busy with work during the Summer season to be able to find much time for it (or anything else really!). And if I do get some free time I want to be outside, not inside in my cave!

Anyway, as a result of the fine weather my American friends have obviously tired of and sent across the Atlantic to me, Pose2Lux has gone on a bit of a hiatus.

It's a good thing really, though. It's important right now to let v0.4.x settle down and be as stable and reliable as it can be. I want it to be bug free before I start on the next big development (built in material editor). The material editor is quite a daunting exercise. I don't think it'll be difficult to program, but it's going to take a lot of code, perhaps as much again as is already in Pose2Lux.

Site News

So, here's the deal... basically, there are several more hurtles to overcome... or rather, unfinished projects, before this site is anywhere where I want it to be. Overall, I think we're good: we can let the site run for a while the way it is. But there are things that are gonna have to happen... at some point.

Here's my ToDo, in case you're interested:

Skin and velvet

Well, I've finally started working on version 0.4 which, for me, will be an especially important version.

This version is going to have extended support for Poser's Skin and Velvet nodes. This should enable us to create Lux skin and velvet materials in an XML library, but which can be configured within Poser's material room. That's the theory anyway!

I don't know how much demand there is for this feature, but it's one *I* want so it's going in! How selfish is that? LOL!

From out of the mist ...

... comes version 0.3.6, with support for volumetric atmosphere effects. Fog and mist are now easily achieved, as are light beams in dusty rooms etc.

The code affects lots of different parts of Pose2Lux: cameras, lights, emitters and so on so I'm trying to be extra careful before uploading this update. I don't want to break anything that was already working!

Still, it should be available some time today :-)

Oh my! Oh my-oh-MY!

Well, suddenly things got ever so much more exciting. The full Editor has all sort of editing capability now. Such as smilies. Cool Too cool. And now:
